I-495 & I-270 Managed Lanes Study

Interstate Access Point Approval

In October 2022, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) approved the application for Interstate Access Point Approval (IAPA) prepared by the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) in accordance with Title 23, U.S.C., Section 111. An IAPA is required for any project with new or modified access to an interstate facility, such as I-495 and I-270. The IAPA application includes the results of MDOT SHA’s safety and operations analyses and confirms the new or modified access points in the Selected Alternative will not have a significant adverse impact on the safety and operation of the interstate facility or local street network. The Draft IAPA Application was included as Appendix B in the Final Environmental Impact Statement and the Final IAPA Application and Appendices were submitted to FHWA following the issuance of the Record of Decision (ROD) in August 2022, announcing Alternative 9 – Phase 1 South as the Selected Alternative for the I-495 & I-270 Managed Lanes Study. The Final IAPA Application and Appendices can be viewed and downloaded using the links below.
